2006 SSC Ultimate Aero
SSC Ultimate Aero specs
Top Speed: 273 mph / 439.5 km/h
0-60 mph: 3 seconds
Engine: Supercharged V-8 1046 HP
America no longer takes a backseat in the world of supercars. The 2006 SSC Ultimate Aero is the fastest American car on the road. Shelby Super Cars (SSC) has created the Ultimate Aero as direct competition to the new Bugatti Veyron. The Ultimate Aero is best known for its stability and endurance at speeds greater than 250 mph. In fact, it is estimated (in wind tunnel tests) that the supercar's top speed is closer to 273 mph.
Exclusive and Record Breaking Speed
The Ultimate Aero is an exclusive automobile to own. Only twenty-five Aeros will be created throughout 2006 and 2007. There is not an exact breakdown, however, of the number of traditional Aeros and Ultimate Aeros in that number. The traditional Aero sports car is nothing to sneeze at with top speeds around 240 mph, but the SSC Ultimate Aero rules the road. In fact, in the Ultimate Aero broke the Road & Track slalom record formerly held by the Ferrari Enzo.
Distinctive Design
The Aero is designed with scissor doors, much like the Lamborghini and Ferrari sports cars. It also makes good use of carbon fiber and titanium. This keeps the overall weight of the Aero low to help with overall speed. Fast car Ultimate Aero has further modifications, including making almost all equipment optional, to further reduce weight. For example, the Ultimate Aero has no air conditioning or trunk space, but most would consider this a fair trade for the power the vehicle produces.
The Bottom Line
The SSC Ultimate Aero sports car is a premium example of American craftsmanship. Of course, supercars such as this come with a price tag capable of making a serious dent in your bottom line. The base Aero is available from around $240,000, while the Ultimate Aero is projected to reach a price closer to $650,000.
For those able to afford the ultimate in speed, no price is too high for such an exclusive and exotic machine. The rest of us will have to be content watching for the Ultimate Aero's performance on the International Show Circuit beginning in November, 2006

The MDX is the first crossover SUV to have third-row seating. It is related to the Honda Pilot. The Alphanumeric moniker stands for “Multi-Dimensional luXury”. It is built by Honda of Canada Manufacturing Ltd. in Alliston, Ontario, Canada. It was introduced in late 2000 as a 2001 model, replacing the slow-selling U.S.-only body-on-frame SLX, based on the Isuzu Trooper. In Japan, it filled a gap when the Honda Horizon (also based on the Trooper) was discontinued in 1999. In 2003, the Honda MDX went on sale in Japan and Australia. Australian MDXs were all equipped with the 2001-2003 Touring ‘Kiwi’ style wheels and were all equipped with the Rear-Seat DVD entertainment system.Acura is currently creating a crossover to slot above the MDX.
The latest MDX features a new 3.7-liter SOHC VTEC V6 with 300 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, which Acura says now features more heavy-duty parts for extra longevity. Acura has replaced the five-speed automatic transmission with a new six-speed transmission, bringing EPA fuel economy to an estimated 16/21 mpg for city/highway driving.
The MDX is offered in five trim levels starting with the base model and moving up through the Technology, Technology and Entertainment, Advance and Advance and Entertainment groupings. The Technology package adds premium leather trim, navigation, and a 410-watt audio system, while the Advance package adds to that a collision-detecting system that pre-charges the brakes, adaptive cruise control, blind spot information and an active damper system for the suspension. ACURA-RSX
Since its debut in July of 2001, the RSX sports coupe has been an unqualified success, winning an array of industry awards including being named to Car and Driver’s “10 Best” and Ward’s “10 Best Engines” lists. To maintain the RSX’s position as the benchmark in its class, Acura’s dynamic sports coupe receives substantial performance and styling enhancements for 2005 that update its dynamic looks, refine and modernize the interior and make it even more fun to drive. For 2005, the high performance Type-S model receives engine and exhaust system modifications that boost horsepower from 200 to 210 and torque from 142 lb-ft to 143 lb-ft. Engine output was optimized by applying high performance camshafts and enlarging the diameter of the intake duct by 10 percent. A larger diameter exhaust pipe and free-flowing catalytic converter helped to boost horsepower by increasing exhaust flow by 10 percent.Ever seen a 75-year-old boy racer? Not a pretty sight, you say? Well, maybe not to a 25-year-old but I still have all my faculties and Paul Newman’s older than me and he’s racing in this year’s Daytona 24 Hours. Normally I drive with dignity, as befits a person of my age. Unfortunately this copper-colored rocketship absolutely refused to be driven slowly. It begged to hit the 8000 rpm redline, snicked through its gears quicker than a train conductor can punch a ticket, cornered as though glued to the pavement. Yes, the Acura RSX S-Type may be a front-wheel-drive coupe derived from a Civic platform but on the road it is pure sports car and don’t let a rear-drive fanatic tell you otherwise. Yet I was prepared not to like it, having experienced too many cars that demand the agility of a sloth to enter and exit. Indeed, this was all but confirmed on the BC Ferry when the attendant parked me against an inner wall. With less than 2-ft. clearance that barn-wide door wouldn’t open enough to let me out. Luckily the seatbacks recline to near-horizontal so I managed to wiggle into the back seat and exit, albeit ungracefully. Once off the ship, however, I fell in love with the RSX, the nearest thing to the fountain of youth on four wheels.Freshened styling and sporty-model upgrades mark Acura’s entry-level car for 2005. RSX is a 2-dr hatchback coupe sold in base and higher-performance Type-S trim. Both have a 2.0-liter 4-cyl engine. The 160-hp base model offers 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmissions. The sportier Type-S comes only with a 6-speed manual and for ’05 gains 10 hp, to 210. Both get revised suspension, steering, and brakes, plus a minor facelift, more heavily bolstered front seats, and extra interior accents in chrome and faux titanium. The Type-S has a firmer suspension, and, for ’05, increases wheel size to 17 inches from 16 and gains a standard rear spoiler. The base model retains 16s. Every RSX includes antilock 4-wheel disc brakes and front side airbags, sunroof, and heated mirrors. Leather upholstery is standard for the Type-S and available on the base. Type-S also comes with an in-dash CD changer. On the road, the first thing we noticed is how smooth the new shifter is and how easy the transmission is to operate. The clutch is also very buttery soft, as it never lets your leg get sore and makes finding the friction point a breeze. This is arguably one of the nicest transmission/clutch setups we’ve sampled as of late. We noticed that there wasn’t an armrest on the driver’s right side, which is a bit awkward. While we found the Acura RSX had plenty of headroom for our 5-foot-11 frame, someone taller might find it a bit tight. We also noticed that the car can get pretty loud inside. Substantial road noise comes through the floor from bumps and ruts in the road, and the engine is loud, though only on the street with the windows rolled down and the motor winding up into the upper-rpm range. On the freeway in sixth gear it really isn’t an issue. Other than the noise complaint, driving this car is a very rewarding experience. To make it easier for rear occupants to get in, the right front passenger seat will slide forwards when you flips the backrest forward, and automatically slide back to its original position. The two rear seats are separated by a centre storage bin, and for adults, offer adequate legroom but headroom is marginal. In fact, the rear passengers sit right under the rear window.

Cadillac Unveils The XTS Platinum Concept
• A new study re-imagining the luxury sedan, showcasing the progression of the Cadillac Art and Science philosophy
• Designed from the inside out, featuring a new concept for the interface between the driver and the auto electronics
• Plug-in hybrid system is matched with a 3.6L V-6 and all-wheel drive for dynamic and efficient performance
Cadillac unveiled the XTS Platinum Concept at the 2010 North American International Auto Show, suggesting a new paradigm for the luxury sedan of the future. The concept showcases Cadillac’s emerging top-of-the-line Platinum series of models, emphasizing new expressions of luxury and technological features, including a plug-in hybrid propulsion system.
The XTS Platinum Concept was designed from the inside out, re-imagining the luxury sedan as a personal headquarters, built for efficiency, luxury and connectivity. The concept introduces a new approach to in-car electronics that improves the form and function of the car’s entertainment, navigation and information systems.
‘The XTS Platinum concept is the next expression of Cadillac’s Art and Science execution philosophy, reflecting our drive to deliver the latest innovations in the most artful manner,’ said Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac general manager. ‘We envisioned this concept as an automotive personal headquarters, using advanced technology to enable new levels of connectivity and luxury.’
The XTS Platinum Concept uses Cadillac’s 3.6L V-6 Direct Injection gas engine, paired with a plug-in hybrid system. The plug-in technology enables the battery to fully charge from a standard electrical outlet, enabling pure electric propulsion in many driving situations, especially urban commutes in which fuel efficiency may double that of a conventional hybrid.
Traditional luxury sedans were defined by elegant interiors and Cadillac’s XTS Platinum Concept propels that formula into the future. It delivers new approaches to luxury within a design that combines fine craftsmanship with customer-driven innovation. Like the current Platinum Edition products, such as Escalade Platinum and the STS and DTS Platinum sedans, the interior is based on hand cut-and-sewn materials. The XTS Platinum Concept injects more contemporary forms and themes into the interior design, including the use of Organic Light-Emitting Diode (O-LED) displays in place of traditional gauges and screens.
The concept previews a new integration philosophy guiding the development of future models with respect to in-car electronics. The intent is to progress Cadillac’s intuitive in-car electronics systems, typified by the deployable touch-screen navigation system that has been highly acclaimed in the brand’s CTS and SRX product lines. The XTS Platinum Concept previews this strategy via the minimization of traditional buttons and switches. Designers blended the display screens into a flowing instrument panel. They call it a ‘dead front’ design, because the panels appear black until the car is turned on and the screens illuminate. The instrument panel itself reflects the XTS Platinum’s other focus – uncompromising luxury and attention to detail on the interior.
‘The Platinum distinction in Cadillac means the fullest extent of luxury and technology and we’ve tried to reach even further with this concept,’ said Clay Dean, Cadillac design director. ‘Just as the technology pushes the boundaries of what a Cadillac can offer, so do the details that make the XTS Platinum Concept an uncompromising experience.’
The interior takes inspiration from nature, specifically the intricate layers of petals that combine to form an orchid. Cadillac designers translated that into a layered and detailed interior. Light cream is the cabin’s primary color and is contrasted with darker elements, such as the steering wheel and an overhead console motif that runs the length of interior’s roof. The console is made of a richly finished wood and houses lighting features.
Premium leather seats include a new style of automotive suede, with a laser-etched pattern. The patterned material adorns the center sections of the seats and accents the door trim. Thoughtfully detailed stitching is used throughout the interior, including the seats, instrument panel and door panels. Passengers in the spacious rear compartment of the XTS Platinum Concept also have access to the car’s connectivity feature, along with a range of infotainment choices.
‘We never lost sight of the fact that a large luxury sedan needs to be spacious and accommodating,’ said Dean. ‘Passengers will find generous headroom, legroom and knee space, along with the technology elements that make the drive more productive.’
A new proportion
The XTS Platinum Concept has a distinctive proportion that transcends the traditional aesthetic of luxury sedans and carries the brand’s Art and Science design in a more progressive manner. The unique proportion supports the ‘inside out’ design priority, while creating a sleek profile that complements the car’s advanced technology elements and necessary aerodynamics.
‘The XTS Platinum Concept design artfully conveys its focus on functionality through technology,’ said Dean. ‘It is the antithesis of the conventional three-box sedan, suggesting the active evolution of Cadillac’s design language.’
A sweeping profile culminates in a short, high deck lid that meets the XTS Platinum Concept’s aerodynamic needs – including a rear spoiler mounted on the deck lid, incorporating the center high-mounted stop lamp. A high, sloping beltline gestures the vehicle forward, suggesting motion, while the fenders flare outward wrapping tightly around 20-inch wheels and tires. The wheel-to-body proportion was carefully tailored to visually communicate the car’s all-wheel-drive chassis.
Like the interior, the exterior elements are precisely tailored and elegantly detailed. Brushed billet aluminum trim is used selectively and the 20-inch, 11-spoke wheels feature a brushed aluminum face accented with bright inserts within the spokes. The wheels are wrapped with special Bridgestone tires that were created specifically for the XTS Platinum Concept.
Signature elements essential to Cadillac’s Art and Science design language include vertical headlamp and taillamps, with integrated light pipes and richly detailed lighting components. The headlamps feature light-emitting diode technology for bright illumination that requires less energy, as well as Cadillac’s Adaptive Forward Lighting technology, which turns the headlamps with the direction of the front wheels for greater visibility in turns.
Purposeful and efficient performance
The XTS Platinum concept’s plug-in hybrid electric propulsion system (PHEV) builds on the experience Cadillac has gained with the Escalade Hybrid and Escalade Platinum Hybrid flagship models. The plug-in capability boosts the car’s electric-only driving capability, offering additional battery energy capacity and enabling it to recharge from a standard external electrical outlet. The key benefit of external plug-in recharging is that in many situations – such as overnight parking – the battery can fully recharge in roughly five hours while the car is not in use. The plug-in system operates at maximum efficiency when operating on power the battery has drawn from the electric grid. In some conditions, such as urban commutes, drivers can experience efficiency that doubles that of conventional hybrids.
At higher speeds or when conditions demand it, such as brisk acceleration, a combination of engine power and electric power or engine power only, propels the vehicle. The combination of the Direct Injection V-6 engine and the PHEV system featuring fully electric variable drive provides a spirited driving experience. The system provides an estimated 350 horsepower (260 kW) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (400 Nm).
Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) enables the XTS Platinum Concept to deliver superior road-holding performance while maintaining luxury car composure in ‘regular’ driving conditions. It uses shocks controlled by advanced magneto-rheological technology, rather than mechanical valves, to greatly accelerate response time and precision.
MRC uses electronic sensors at all four wheels to literally ‘read the road’ every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions.
An advanced, specially calibrated all-wheel-drive system ensures optimal traction in wet and slippery conditions, and helps deliver maximum traction while cornering. Four-wheel disc brakes, with four-channel ABS, StabiliTrak stability control and full-function traction control complete the drivetrain details.
‘The XTS Platinum Concept was designed to deliver an engaging driving experience without compromising the functional features, space and comfort customers seek in a luxury car,’ said Nesbitt. ‘It is a new vision of luxury that uses advanced technology to deliver functionality efficiently and rewardingly.’

First Look: 2011 Nissan Micra
Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn unveiled the company’s all-new Micra today at the 2010 Geneva motor show. Although the Micra itself will not be coming to America, it is built on an all-new global small-car platform known within Nissan as the V-platform.
“This new platform changes everything,” boasted Ghosn during the press conference. “Our next compact cars are in the pipeline. In the past, Nissan had a minimal presence in the compact segment because we did not have a specific platform suited for those customers’ needs. Now we will be able to compete, and at the highest level. Our new lineup of compact cars will help to increase Nissan’s global market presence from 80% today to 94% in 2012.”
Versatility is the key to Nissan’s small-car strategy -- and, for that matter, the V-platform itself. The architecture will spawn at least three different products for Nissan’s ever-expanding global stage, and will be built in four plants spread around the globe: India, Thailand, China, and Mexico. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about where Nissan hopes to sell small cars. Indeed, Nissan sources confirm that each of these four plants will be fed by a locally-sourced supply chain that will keep production simple and cheap, crucial factors for profitability in the razor-thin profit margins that small cars command.
Nissan won’t continue building the Micra in England, but Europe continues to be an important market for its subcompact offering. Nissan also released details pertaining to the European-spec car today, which will ultimately reach dealers later this fall.
Cosmetically, the new Micra is less radical than the outgoing model, eschewing the “bubble-on-bubble” aestethic in favor of a rounded, more conservative look. The interior is similarly rounded, and shares many parts (the door pulls, steering wheel, and climate controls, for instance) with the Cube.
Standard in each Euro-spec Micra is a 80-hp, 1.2-liter inline three-cylinder engine, mated either through a five-speed manual gearbox or Nissan’s (seemingly omnipresent) continually-variable transmission. If that isn’t enough power, a supercharged form of the same engine will also be available, producing just under 100 hp. More importantly, the supercharged engine is fitted with a stop/start system, allowing it to produce only 95 grams of carbon dioxide for each kilometer driven.
What engines will we get? Perhaps a better question is what car will we receive? Our sources within Nissan aren’t saying, but they confirm that we will get some version of the Micra for America, but with completely different styling. One assumes that the handsome little Micra would be deemed too similar to our existing Versa. But the Versa is so boring, we’d be happy if the Micra just replaced it, quite frankly.
